Holiday Weekend in West Plains - Take 1

I spent Memorial Day weekend in West Plains, Missouri and I'll be going back for the 4th of July (most likely), hence the "take 1" in the title.

I'm not a country girl. I don't like bugs and snakes and spiders. No thank you. Ticks scare the bejeezus out of me.

But I love it at the Gabel's house. It's on acres and acres of land and it is absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere is so much more care free than in Columbia. You work hard during the day and get the most restful sleep at night because all you can hear is crickets and all you see is pitch black. It's amazing and it's something that I miss when I return home. It takes a while to get adjusted to noise when you're trying to fall asleep after spending just one night in the county.

Another thing I love about the country is the very traditional way of life. Of course, it's not as strict as it once was I'm sure, but the women cook and clean and the men do all the outside labor as well as any heavy duty things inside the house. Although I have a few modern views, I also have a few traditional ones. I like the defined roles. Somehow, it's comforting.

Over the weekend, I was finally able to meet the cow that was named after me!
This is Maggie.
I was also able to finally touch a cow! I had seen them up close on my last visit to West Plains, but didn't touch them. This time I did!

It was such an exciting experience. I always seem to have new ones on every visit there. Last time, I had homemade ice cream for the first time so of course, we had to have it again.

I also saw Lynsie and Chris's "baby" boy! He's gotten so big!

Another first - I drove a 4 Wheeler! It took some time to get used to and I'm still not completely great at it, but practice makes perfect!

Over the weekend, Lynsie asked me to be her Maid of Honor! I was so shocked that sappy ol' me started crying! I knew I was going to be a bridesmaid but never expected being asked to be the Maid of Honor. I feel so honored!

Before I left for the weekend, I said goodbye to a friend that I've known since I was 15. We did high school broadcast together and we ended up going to the same college. He's helped me through much of my broadcast education so far, from giving me tips to simply calming me down when I got too overwhelmed. He's headed to Indiana as a morning anchor and reporter. I know I'll see him on a network someday and be able to say I know him.

(Yes, we matched)

Speaking of broadcast, I received a listserve email saying the station needed a live reporter on Friday mornings for the rest of Summer Session 1 (until July 4th). I've had some training in live reporting in classes so I figured I'd send my YouTube  link to the News Director just to offer to help out and low and behold, I got the position! I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I start this Friday at 2:30 am. Wish me luck!
